I've finally decided to mount the GPS on the right side using RAM mounts and the Garmin 26xx/27xx motorcycle kit. I haven't decided on the wiring method yet; direct or indirect. I do also have a Powerlet ordered. The direct view of the instrument panel is excellent. With my Cortech tank bag in place, however, the angle is slightly higher to clear the bag in a right turn. The normal view of the gas gauge is partially obstructed; very minor inconvenience.

The last picture was taken standing behind the bike, not from the seating position.

My next project is to mount the Escort X50 on the left side.

I dunno, Avi.

That's a +$1,000 GPS that you are making a tempting target for thieves.

I think that it's going to get pretty old removing and reinstalling it every time you want to leave the bike for 20 minutes/ out of eyesight. At least you could consider installing a Scorpio 500 alarm with pager to let you know someone is monkeying with the bike.

Does that mounting position obscure any gauge information or idiot lights. Does 4200 RPM make the unit vibrate/loosen excessively. What about glare on the screen?

Just points to consider.

Food for thought:

The Escort 8500 X50 is orientated (bent) for North American drivers who sit in the left hand drivers seat.

Which means you will want your escort to be mounted on the right where you have your GPS now. Also, I prefer to look at the road, way up ahead of me, so I bought a Helmet Assisted Radar Detector (H.A.R.D.) unit that works excellent with the escort 8500 X-50.

However, you may like your escort on the left side since it is not a "line of sight" device except for the Laser detection. Once your escort detects Laser, you might as well pull over and get your license and registration ready for THE MAN, because he got you.

TN,

The GPS was bought mainly for the use with the car. I didn't want to spend bucks on a second GPS, so, I wanted to find a way to mount it on the bike. Since I do most of my riding in somewhat familiar territory, I'll only be using it occassionally.

I can orient the GPS for a clear, unobstructed view of the instrument panel. With the tank bag, I may loose a very minimal partial view of panel...a slight tilt of the head once in a while and it's all good.

I'll be road-testing it this weekend to see if the mount stays in place. I haven't had any problems with the dreaded 4k-5k rpm vibration since installing the PCIII with the "smoothness" map.

As far as mounting/dismounting it, no problems. I'm a very patient person. Plus, the bike does have an alarm. I also plan on replacing the wingnut with a regular nut for a semi-permanent installation of the RAM mount.

On the subject of glare, I don't forsee any problems since I can change the position and angle to minimize it.

You should look at the RAM-HB1 or -HB2 mount which screw onto the resouviour clamp.
Woodstock,

I bought the left-hand mirror mount RAM ball from Motorcycle Larry. Once mounted, I can switch off the GPS and radar mounts if needed.
