I Need to Slow Down

I'm wondering where all the, "FJR vibrates too much," and, "FJR needs a 6th gear," people are. WBill

I'm so glad to read that I am not the only one. Starting about a month after I took delivery of my 2009 (faster than the 2007 by the way) I noticed that it really felt smooth carving through the turns in on Blewett Pass. Looked at the speedometer a few minutes later as I was gaining on a couple on a HD cruiser pretty quickly and saw about 85. Thought the speedo was wrong but learned a short while later that it was pretty accurate when the WSP stopped me and let me know that 81 was pushing it some. Couldn't believe how slow 60 was until I got back to I-90 and 70mph. Just saw an article about Texas considering raising the limit from 80 to 85 on portions of the freeway there. Never happen in Washington.

Hey ill let you in on a secret, radar detectors just let you know you are caught. By the time it goes off, got ya. Too late. They are completely useless, at least in Tx. No highway patrol leaves it on and just cruises around with it on. Maybe other depts, or other states. Not to be the bearer of bad news but I know...and I love my FJR! It does go fast...up to 70. I would never condone speeding....

You are right in some cases. However, many LEOs do leave the radar on continuously in various places across the country. Also, a good RD will give you a warning a long way off and if there are other vehicles on the road you will get warned when the LEO shoots radar at the vehicle ahead of you. They are certainly not fool proof and you still have to pay attention and use care. In rural NY state where the roads are patrolled by many different agencies, my RD saves me from at least one speeding ticket every time I take the FJR out.

Be careful. Talkin bout it raises the risk. Sounds like either the speed limit is too low or you might be speeding too much. Latter is more dangerous... take care. Speed can kill. I've seen it.

Trooper...your's has a rev limiter, eh? :D

Seriously though, mine is chip controlled and tied to the local speed limits, so mine never exceeds the posted...except when I have to pass the car going dangerously slow of course.

Of course with the Trooper mod...I may get pulled over for louder pipes...but I will just tell the kind officer that, of course, loud pipes save lives...and that should do the trick. :D

Thanks for that Mod idea...I will do it as soon as I am able...and Bust gets his ass over here to lend me a dremel.

On a lighter note, man if everyone had that, my job would be gone, here's to job security right?... yeah, I think you will love the trooper mod. No one has come back to me with anything remotely negative. That and the extremely low cost of stock pipes that sound like aftermarket. I hope I can get the tailcones though. I think that will top it off. Thanks, glad to give good mods.

I have an Escort Passport radar detector with a Screamer piezo alert system.(https://www.motorcycleradar.com)

I can't say that I don't go over the limit, its hard not to with the FJR, I just like to be "heads up" of the surroundings.

Now this is just a tool I use to make my ride more enjoyable keeping me aware the local constabulary is watching.

I have an Escort Passport 9500 ix mounted via Garauld's mount on the clutch reservoir, with the mono audio cable plugged into an amplirider. It works great, and allows me to note the presence of many LEO's out there, many with unmarked cars/trucks. It literally saves my butt almost every time I ride. I don't go that far over the Speed Limit, but as noted, it's hard not to push it a bit with the FJR, especially in the great wide open spaces of the west. Most of the LEO's here leave their radars on all the time, except on the Interstates, where I try not to ride too much anyway.

I think Utah still has the highest speed limit section of a highway in the US. There's part of I 15 that has an 80 mph limit. However, I did hear, via the news, that Texas is considering a higher limit. Did that higher limit pass the legislature yet??

Montana is pretty good. You can go 10 mph over the posted limit and if they do stop you, you can only get a $20 no-points ticket. We can live with that. Legalities aside, we have numerous big, open stretches where you can see for miles at the 12 o'clock, six o'clock, and three and nine o'clock. I always get in at least one little speed blast, especially on a Sunday morning, when 125 mph feels just about right. I will say the Feej seems a little buzzy at 145 and then, after that, could use a sixth gear! But honestly, I've never exceeded 155 on Montana highway, and that was not the FJR.

Montana sounds very good..................and then there's Oregon!!?? Don't get me started!

In driver's-ed they taught me to get on the gas to merge with traffic when entering high speed traffic. We need to sponsor an FJR training school, where we can re-teach ratchet-wristed Feejer owners how to hit the brakes to make up for what they just did on the on-ramp. Here's an interesting perspective: after 3 seconds on the throttle, EVERYTHING becomes oncoming traffic.

Drive safe

This is one of the only two complaints I have about my new FJR. On my previous bike, a Victory Kingpin with some fairly loud pipes, I had a really good idea of my speed just from the sound and feel of it. This thing is so quiet, by comparison, that I have to look down at the speedo frequently or I find myself in the 90mph range. It's going to take some time to get used to it.

You have to choose your moments. If you are constantly over the limit by a healthy amount the law of averages is going to catch up with you (That's Officer Law of Averages to you and me).

A strategy I use is to throttle back when I get within 10 clicks of a town/city, plus, watch traffic behaviour ahead.

Still, I know what you mean - My FZ1 has much more of a sense of speed due to wind blast, the FJR not so much.

Dude I got radar run on me twice in 30 miles today! No sooner did I get safely thru the speed trap did the Troopers jump in their cruisers and pass me (going much faster than the limit) and set up again 4 miles ahead of me WTF?!?

How bout when the Trooper comes ALL THE WAY out in front of you from out of nowhere to point at you and holler?! I am very critical of that move. I think it could mean problems for everyone involved.

I drive for work so I go the speed limit when Im on the clock and see a lot of police doing what they do. I am trying to get to a place where I always know when Im speeding, do it for short periods of time, and be selective.
