I've designed a radar detector mount that will attach to either handlebar fluid reservoir (left or right side) along the same lines as both my GXM antenna and Littlite mounts. This design will require Velcro to be applied to the bottom of the RD. I have also made provisions to allow a Velcro strap to wrap over the top of the RD for added security, so that if you hit a large bump/pothole etc, it should prevent you seeing the RD bouncing down the highway in your rear-view mirror.

There is also an extra set of mounting holes to allow for left side reservoir mounting, and the slots on both sides are the Velcro strap attachment points. I have drawn a fluid reservoir underneath the RD mount, so you have a visual of whats going on.

Velcro strap is supplied to help secure the mount along with adhesive backed velcro for the base of the radar detector. Stainless steel reservoir mounting hardware also supplied.

CNC machined from 6061 billet aluminum and fits all model year bikes.

Even though you have the read to go for the resevior. Might want to tap a hole or hole(s) in the bottom for RAM mount adaptation ;)

I have heard others more in tune with electronics than I, about not placing magnets close to electronics, which is a part of the design of another RD mount on the market. My design will remove this concern. I cannot comment on the validity of this, so don't ask me for proof of the theory.

No request for proof... but the guys at Valentine say it's BS... at least for their hardware.

Any way to design a locking mount for the Valentine ?

Mill a 1/8" recess in the base, get rid of the ears, drill & tap the sides, design a metal strap to lock the V1 to the base ? No theft worries that way.

Yea, I'd heard that too, but in the 80's I had a spectrum whistler that mounted with a very strong magnet, and I never had an issue with it malfunctioning, but YMMV.

 
Well it would seem the magnet theory is better suited for an episode of myth busters. :lol:

 
I'd be interested.

Perhaps you can gimbal the mount to allow for some pitch/yaw adjustment then lock in place.

I like the ears -- good idea.

Perhaps you can leave one edge slightly longer, and put a few slots to allow zip-tying the electrical cords to the aluminum base. (kind of like what cateye did to the support bracket for the N/LINE shelf:

not sure if you can see it good, but there's slots on the vertical mount that you can zip-tie wires or whatever to)

 
Count me in. Also if you could come up with some type of rain cover for a Beltronics RX-65 to attach to it, that would be great. :rolleyes:

 
Just curious ... is the primary purpose restraint of the RD, or protection from the elements, or a little bit of both? Would it be able to handle a variety of RD types, or are you building it for just one brand? Ports for audio/electrical connections?

The purpose of this mount thus far is for restraint only. For me, if it starts raining heavy, I remove my RD from the elements and place it inside my tankbag. I can still pick up radar and loose the laser function, but due to the rain, I'm usually not heavily speeding at this point anyway.

On the move in rain with a bigger aftermarket windshield, its surprising how dry the cockpit of the FJR will remain.

I designed this around the dimensions of my Passport X50 with some clearance built in for the velcro strap, but I see no reason that this wouldn't work for any late model RD.

Ian,I have the magnetic base plate on my Ram setup ,and my passport 2 .It don't seem to affect it at all,affect it at all,affect it at all. You might want to draw up a little pic of the CC100 mounting block that we have been discussing , FJRers with the Ram and CC100 might be ready for another mounting option . If they already have the CC mount you could machine the mounting block for them for around 125.00 LOL talk to you later. good luck with the pipes . current temp in Hills Iowa, -2 degrees not counting wind chill. COME ON DAYTONA BIKE WEEK!
