When I read this to the IBR Staff, they BURST out laughing (the rallymistress actual spewed coffee on her keyboard!) There are many behind-the-scenes issues surrounding this problem that drove the decisions. As OCfjr correctly observed earlier in this thread, the IBR is NOT a spectator sport. It's an individual challenge within a privately organized event.
But thanks for the morning chuckle.... Tom Austin is still snickering....
Alright then, we are about to head downstairs.... final odo recordings happen at 8:30 am EDT. then the bikes are impounded until Go Time. Then we kick back and watch riders tremble with nerves/excitement/fear/anticipation of 10:00am departures.

LOL, ya no kidding -glad to see the staff is having fun -and that's a cool bonus location.

Been lurking for a while around here and thought I would chime in. 1st off
All this stuff about no blogs, no twittering, SPOT tracking turned off really isn't a problem for me. Especially when considering the _EXCELLENT_ (!!!!!!) coverage by Tom Austin. Just amazing. Large PDF's with tons of great content and pictures all in one spot. WC, pass on my thanks to Tom for an amazing job! With daily reports like this I simply don't need to be jumping all over the internet looking for tidbits of information with all that other SPOT\BLOG\TWITTER crap.
Secondly....
I noticed on theDay-1 (Sunday 23rd) daily report that they gave an example of one of the bonii. You have to go to Martha's Vineyard and visit the Chappaquidik bridge. All well and good. But I am sure none of the entrants have been paying attention to the news. And on the news this weekend was the Prez Obama was starting his first vacation this weekend and he was staying in Martha's Vineyard. From what I can figure a few short miles from the bridge.
You can just imagine all the security that's going to be floating around. Now, I'm not there or involved. But I can well imagine that the secret service will simply set up camp right at the ferry to the island and will be screening people coming and going very carefully. Can't wait to see what happens when a couple well worn LD riders show up insisting they need to visit the island.
Guess the IBR staff lives up to its reputation

I'm trying really hard not to earn a time-out...
The primary reason for this restriction that was explained to me was simply 'a safety issue'. I'm paraphrasing but something to the effect of.
"We don't want riders thinking about their next blog post while riding, or heaven forbid having to clean up the mess from someone trying to text and running into the back of a truck."
No mention of press or publicity, etc.
Nobody has to text while riding in order to use any of the tools Facebook/Twitter/blogging. There are plenty of FREE speech to text technologies out there and plenty of guys talk on the phone while riding, including chatting up their loved ones to stay awake and in some cases calling the RM to emphatically declare how much they hate them.
Seriously, there's a whole lot of significant down/boring ass interstate riding between boni locations. On the IBR more than any other given the distances covered. You can only re-think your route and boni locations so much and once you're riding, well you're mostly committed to the route you planned. I'd rather think about my next blog post than how I should have gone somewhere else instead and dwell on that
I would add that anyone who would consider texting while riding to be very foolish indeed.
But I dislike the notion of, "It's not safe for you to do that so we're banning it", or "You can't be serious about finishing if you do".
I agree it's not a spectator sport, and I recognize the desire to keep it as low key as possible. But that doesn't stop a lot of people from wanting to keep up with or track of their favorite riders.
Carry On. Am thoroughly enjoying the daily reports thus far.

I could, theorectically, agree that blocking the SPOTs from general view is a good idea. If I'm 'uber-competitive" and find myself within a few hundred miles of another rider I might wonder "hrm, wonder why that person went to that location" or you could potentially forecast their next location.
The blogging thing is over-rated. I like the 'Old School" thinking here. If you want your family to know where you are, call them. My family takes the "No news is good news" approach; if there's nothing significant then there aren't many calls. Conversely, getting that "one" phone call is dreadful, but I'm sure in today's "hyper-communication" frenzy, someone, somewhere, will know where you are.

All riders are out the gate.
This is the fastest Release I have ever done... it is a new record for us: 101 heavily-laden motorcycles were GONE in 5 minutes, 20 seconds.... a blistering rate!
No spills getting out the gate, either.
Iggy and Marbach are deadly serious this time..... I released them together, but they are not "teaming". I believe Marbach is headed to Martha's Vineyard... not sure if Iggy is or not.
Turbo Dave seems very relaxed.... I want him to be a Finisher bad. Hope his routing is decent... in order to be a Finisher, riders need to average about 9000 points on this leg. (This doesn't mean they need to bag 9000 bonus points, as they get 1000 points for their fuel log, additional points for arriving at the checkpoint on time, etc, etc).
All the FJRs got off with no problem at all. Terry Neely is so excited, he is qwaking in his boots on his FJR, as are all 19 FJR1300 riders. Mike Evans is relaxed and confident. He may be the Dark Horse among the FJR riders... some may recall he had a podium Finish in 2007.... 8th Place, IIRC.

Hope Marbach doesnt get held up at Marthas Vinyard The President is there this week on vacation and its a Media Nuthouse
Must of took hours to set-up and stage the smooth and photogenic departure!!! :clapping:
Too cool, in the 2nd video of the departure, one of the riders is on a hack!!!

sure looked that way to me. maybe he is running an aftermarket stator and is saving it for later
I hope greg knows what he's doing. i mean i know he does just hope he is aware of whats going on at the vineyard.
