Side Case split apart?

This happened to my 2003 on the freeway in a turn scraping the cover. Fortunately duct tape is in the top box.

The bike has 51,000 miles and I am at least the third owner. Maybe forth or fifth owner. No service history.

My wild guess is that 15 years of temperature and humidity cycles with thousands of hours of vibration loosened the glue. I will post some pictures of the separated side cover inside.

 
Haha! I see my post #2, "never heard of that...." yet it did happen to me some years later, had BOTH bags drop the painted panel. The painted exterior panel carries the hinges, while the inside panel carries the locking bits. yes, the one on the low side when turning will scrape, probably your first warning that it's happened.

I don't recall what I used. Tried super-double-side tape like they use for body trim on cars, no go. Had to glue 'em down with something...
